Sometimes you do doubt, even when you love God with all your heart. The prophet Jeremiah certainly loved God, but when the Babylonians overran Jerusalem in 586 BC, he surely had a “bout of doubt”. In Lamentations 5:20 he cried, "Why do You forget us forever; why do You forsake us for so long?" Doubt is definitely a problem—a big problem. God calls it sin. Fight it with all your might. Know the occasions of doubt; know the sources of doubt and above all, know the cure for doubt, all of which we will discuss in our sermon today. Remember, even though we sometimes hate to admit it, all doubt can be traced to unbelief in God’s word. Confess that sin to God and move on from there to be immersed in God’s word, then examine yourself and pray like never before! Have you ever found yourself in a situation when someone has said to you, “Trust me, I know what I’m doing.”? Perhaps on certain occasions they did know what they were doing and, unfortunately, sometimes it proved out that they didn’t know after all, and your trust in them was dashed to pieces. However, when the Living God says to trust Him and have faith in Him alone, you can be most certain that God knows what He is doing! Moses addressed God’s people and reminded them of their covenant with Him. He told them to listen and be attentive to God’s word and to perform and do His commands. They were further instructed not to add nor take away from His Word. They were to trust and obey God only. Moses continued to say, “For all the men who followed Baal-Peor (a pagan god), the Lord your God has destroyed them from among you. But you who held fast to the Lord your God are alive today, every one of you.” What a marvelous promise to us today, to those who are obedient and hold fast to God (meaning to cleave), for we also are destined for the promise of life! It is one thing to say I trust and have faith in God, but we must remember these sober words from Jesus when He said, “And why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” He was emphasizing the importance of trust and faith and backing up confession with obedience. Samuel also spoke to his generation and said, “Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.” Yes, man will disappoint us and often fail to know everything, but Jesus, our risen Savior, will never deceive nor fail us nor ever give us a snake instead of a fish. We can trust Him for He alone is the way, the truth, and the life! References: I Samuel 15:22; Deuteronomy 4; Isaiah 30; John 14:6; Luke 11:11 (Hear the entire message below.) Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my load is light.” As we grow and mature in a life-imparting and spirit-led relationship with Jesus Christ, the old man with all the old ways, bad habits, worldly mindset and ideologies, must become things of the past and dead to us. We must let go and let God enable us to fret less and rest more in Him. Someone has said that, “A dead man doesn’t get hurt.” I might add neither does a dead man fret, worry, doubt, and fear, nor is he anxious for anything. In fact, as believers we are to have this confession, “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and delivered Himself up for me.” David spoke these words to God’s people and said, “Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him and He will do it. Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.” Remember, we can experience rest through commitment and obedience to Jesus Christ OR we can fret due to doubt, fear and unbelief. Our nature is broken and gives us a warped view on everything. We don’t (well, actually can’t) see things as God sees things. Mankind is constantly arguing about what is right and wrong…and then changes it all as time goes by. But God is stable. He never changes, nor do His principles. Be a part of that stability, help change our world for the better by having God’s nature rule in your heart in all you say and do. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 gives a tall order for behavioral standards, and we could be dismayed in not being able to follow it all. But don’t be fooled; in Christ, you can do all things. The God nature is the good nature– follow it! When we observe the obvious disorder, confusion and chaos in our world today, we are witnessing the outcome of disobedience and rebellion against the only true and living God. God is not the author of this confusion, but of peace. (1 Corinthians 14:33) He also has not given us, His people, a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7) David was certainly out of order and felt the sting of sin and ensuing heartbreak of disobedience when he committed adultery with Bathsheba. His actions were disgraceful and wrong, yet the Bible tells us that David was a man after God’s heart. And he cried out to a forgiving and compassionate God to set things in order in his life. David asked God for help and said, “Order my steps in thy word, and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” (Psalm 119:133) Order here means to be established, be steadfast, be firm, be prepared and to set in place. David was not alone in his striving against sin for we have ALL sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) Like David, each one of us must ask our heavenly Father through Jesus to, “Order my steps, order my thoughts, order my words, so that I may glorify You in all that I do and say.” If you have never put your complete faith in Jesus Christ for your eternal salvation, why not believe what God's word says and call on Jesus Christ to save you right now? © www.123rf.com There are so many songs and poems, movies and plays addressing the question, “What is Life All About?” Well, if you look closely at Chapters 1 through 5 in 1 John, you’ll finally have the answers…the guidelines of life. Make sure you “teach your children well”, as the old 60’s song bawled! We shall cover these areas over the next four teachings. In this first section, we will cover some simple instructions: walk in the light, confess your sins, obey His commands and love one another, not the world. We will explore to whom you confess your sins; where you find God’s commands; and how you can love and obey as God has directed. So come on board. Hang on; it may be a bumpy ride! Paul said that these people exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the creator who is blessed forever. (Romans 1:25) When Paul was in Athens, he also witnessed a city full of idols, where he preached Jesus and His resurrection to the Jews, to God-fearing Gentiles and philosophers of that time. (Acts 17:16-34) In response to Paul’s message of the resurrection of the dead, some of his audience began to sneer and mock, and called him an idle babbler, but others desired to hear him again at a later time. In contrast, some of his listeners joined him and believed—not later, but immediately. In our society today, there continue to be those who reject Jesus and worship and serve the creature (god of this world), but they are fast approaching a fixed day when God will judge the world in righteousness through His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. (Acts 17:31) Let the doubters doubt, but let the righteous stand and SERVE THE CREATOR. Humility, true humility, would admit that we also could have been one of the worse dredges of the earth! When we stop and think of the twists and turns in life, we soon realize that short of a few different variables, we, too, could be that drug addict, bank robber, unfaithful spouse, brutal dictator, etc. “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” The great preacher Charles Spurgeon had a few comments regarding true humility that helps set the stage for our sermon tonight. He said, “It is not humility to underrate yourself. Humility is to think of yourself as God thinks of you. It is to feel that if we have talents, God has given them to us. And let it be seen that, like freight in a vessel, they tend to sink us low. The more we have, the lower we ought to lie.” Humility doesn’t mean that you hang your head down and walk meekly on the earth being a doormat for everyone that comes along. No, no—that is not what God intended. Humility just means you know your gifts, but you know they didn’t come from you, they came from God. Humility is a protection against pride. Pride will get you all self-righteous when you see someone in sin; someone who has failed to reach the level of God’s directions. Rather, if you are “heavy” with God’s nature, you are lowly in heart and humble. You realize that all you have and all you are, have come from God and anything else ruling in you would make you one of the “dredges of the earth.” Scripture References: James 4:6, Matthew 11:29, Matthew 23:12, Colossians 3:12-13, 1 Peter 5:5b-6, Proverbs 15:31-32, Proverbs 15:33b, Proverbs 16:18-19, Proverbs 16:5 Audio: (Click forward button below to play audio of message and/or download mp3 file.)
