Humility is a spiritual discipline. It does not come to us naturally. If we even understand humility, we are often proud we are humble…duh…I think we need a bit more understanding! Discipline is hard work, done in obscurity, for the sake of excellence. Those same comments apply to humility. We are often not as familiar with humility as we are with pride. The sneaky thing about pride, though, is that we often think we are humble when we are not. Our “humility” is full of holes! Humility is not having low self-esteem, feeling unworthy or inferior or being a nobody. Humility just means you know your gifts but you know Whom they came from, and it wasn’t you! Humility is knowing you are valuable, especially valuable to God, and that is not inferior to anyone. But our relationship with God is all because of Him and not because of us…and that should keep us really humble. If you have never put your complete faith in Jesus Christ for your eternal salvation, why not believe what God's word says and call on Jesus Christ to save you right now? © www.sharefaith.com The song “Who Let the Dogs Out?” reminds me of the chaos that started immediately upon Adam’s sin. Genesis 6:5 tells us that man was wicked and continually evil so God sent a flood to cleanse the earth of all that pollution. Big sin = big flood = big change…right? Wrong! The Bible chronicles mankind’s track record of continuing to disobey God. The discipline given by Him is to reprimand and stop the disobedience but that gets lost in the wash of man’s pride and malevolence. God’s wondrous love, though, is not thwarted by man’s foolishness and even though revolt is in the air, God still provides a rescue for His beloved children. What a God we serve. He gave the reason why he almost slipped in verse 3, “For I was envious of the arrogant, as I saw the prosperity of the world." To slip here means to waver, wobble, become lame, bend, and make to shake. Envy is synonymous with jealousy. Asaph was troubled and lame until he sought the Lord for understanding. He decided to enter the sanctuary of God and, in God’s presence, he was set free from his envy and slippery imprisonment. He also discovered that it was actually the prospering of the wicked that God would set in slippery places and destruction. Like Asaph, have you been envious and jealous toward someone, past or present? If so, get into God’s presence through Christ Jesus and ask Him to forgive you and emancipate you from this terrible prison of sin. Avoid envy by making sure your steps hold fast to God’s paths so that your feet will not slip. See Psalm 17:5. Finally, be mindful of this: “A tranquil heart is life to the body, but passion (envy) is rottenness to the bones.” (Proverbs 14:30) Audio: (Click forward button below to play audio of sermon and/or download mp3 file.)
