Knowing the truth is knowing what is said in the Bible to be true. The knowledge of the scriptures affects our attitude toward the present and the future. The more we know about what God has done in years past, the greater the confidence we have about what He will do in the days ahead. We should read our Bible diligently to increase our trust that God's will is best for us. "For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope." (Romans 15:4 NIV) The Bible is the living book of God's words that reveals to us not only the past but the truth of all that is happening around us now and what is to come in the future. Through the Holy Spirit, we are able to discern who the adversary is and his agenda. God's truth is the light that shows us the enemy's devious works, and by that Light they are destroyed. Temptations, even though a bad thing, can really be a good thing. When you are tempted, it exposes the weaknesses still within you. And, boy, are there a lot of areas of temptations – hatred, anger, disappointment, unkind acts, jealousy, selfishness, etc., as well as the old stand-by, sensual lust. News flash though – the temptation is not the sin, giving in to the temptation is the sin. In our sermon, we will discuss the reasons why God uses temptations:
To further our understanding of temptations, we will also discuss the stages of temptation:
(Hmm—those look mighty familiar, don’t they?) But God never reveals something that He does not show a way of escape. There are steps out of temptation:
Thank You, Lord, for saving our souls. Jesus is truly the only way out of this mess…take it! (Listen to entire sermon below.) In the Book of Revelation, God gives some messages to the “churches”, meaning the “called out” ones…not the buildings! Many people glean much information about the end times and its prophecies from that book, but tonight we shall cover some of God’s conversations on what He has observed…sort of His assessment of His followers. Hold on to your hats, it’s not pretty! Revelation 2-3 compiles a listing of what God has seen in each of the churches in the different areas of the ancient empire. It is best not to be seen only as a report card on what happened long ago, but rather as a teaching tool, if not an outright warning, of what is still going on today. I thank God He is not a vindictive and mean entity, for this assessment is pretty accurate; and, yet, He has not annihilated us. Rather, He wants to teach us and guide us out of our broken nature and into His marvelous light…to a better life, with Him eternal. I don’t know about you, but I think I’m going to listen up right about now! God most certainly has heavenly visions and revelations for all His children. The Lord spoke to Jeremiah while he was still in confinement and said, “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” God has a vision of what could be if His will and His purpose for our lives were fully carried out. We must ask, seek, and knock on heaven’s door and beseech God to reveal unto us great and mighty things which we otherwise would never know. Someone said, “If your vision does not require a miracle that will bring glory to God, then God will reduce your resources so He can get the glory.” Our Father longs to do a new thing in our lives and He says, “Now it will spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Jesus has come to reveal unto us the things of God and the heart of God. He has come to deliver us out of darkness for He is the Light of Life. The vision of God is for us to walk in Spirit and truth in order to fulfill His purposes. Jesus said the Spirit of Truth will glorify Him, “For He will take of mine, and shall disclose (reveal) it to you.” Question: Are you being obedient to God’s heavenly vision for you? Our nature is broken and gives us a warped view on everything. We don’t (well, actually can’t) see things as God sees things. Mankind is constantly arguing about what is right and wrong…and then changes it all as time goes by. But God is stable. He never changes, nor do His principles. Be a part of that stability, help change our world for the better by having God’s nature rule in your heart in all you say and do. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 gives a tall order for behavioral standards, and we could be dismayed in not being able to follow it all. But don’t be fooled; in Christ, you can do all things. The God nature is the good nature– follow it!
