Psalm 119 starts out stating, "How blessed are those whose way is blameless. Who walk in the law of the Lord. How blessed are those who observe His testimonies. Who seek Him with all their heart." Just like that Psalm, we often start out great guns in the Lord, then life hits you in the face and you spend more time trying to get through the battle than remembering that the Lord said for us to remember that, “The battle is not mine, but the Lord’s”! We grow weary, we get confused in the fog of that spiritual warfare and it’s so much easier to pull away from the Lord and take a nap, or worse still, just pass out on Him. Psalm 119 is your defibrillator! Read it! Don’t fade out now – wake up you sleepy head. Get going! (Listen to entire sermon below.) One time I wrote in my journal, “I shall perish in the darkness of my doubt without the light of the hope You give me.” Ever feel like that? What do you do? You can flounder in despair or you can run to the presence of the Lord to fill you with strength and wisdom…your choice. But God does give us some direction…stay “right” with Him and it will go well with you. Psalm 1 gives us a great overview of what happens to the righteous as well as the wicked…and it ain’t pretty…at least for the wicked side of things! The righteous, those who know and love God and submit to His directions, they don’t walk with the wicked; they meditate on and delight in the law of the Lord. God says they will be watered and prosperous. The wicked on the other hand, do walk and give approval to scoffers and sinners; they don’t meditate on or delight in God’s laws. They are like chaff and are blown away, they won’t be in the assembly of the righteous and they will perish! Pretty stark, but pretty eye opening…at least for those who want to see. So, don’t go there…but stay right with God, so it won’t go wrong with you! [Listen to entire sermon by audio below. Clothing, along with water, air, food, and shelter, are most certainly paramount and indispensable for the very survival and existence of mankind on earth. However, along with our earthly apparel, we must be clothed on high by God, through Jesus Christ, if we are to inherit eternal life. A man without Christ is like a man wearing filthy rags – not fit for the kingdom of God. (See the parable of the wedding feast in Matthew 22.) Romans 3:23 says, “For all have signed and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” Isaiah also gives us a description of one who is unclean even in his righteous, well-intended deeds. He says, “For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; and all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.” (Isaiah 64:6) “Kingdom clothing” cannot be fabricated and worn by man. Only God, through Jesus Christ, can adorn the soul with righteous apparel. Isaiah 61:10 says, “I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation. He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” Have you looked into the “mirror of your soul” lately? If so, what did you see – he filthy rags of this world draped over a vagabond wandering aimlessly in this world without a home? Or did you see God’s heavenly garments of purity and righteousness in Christ Jesus? (See Isaiah 1:18) Paul said, “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you – unless you fail the test? (2 Corinthians 13:5) What you wear determines where you are going! We have to know and live the truth as God portrays, not as we see it; we have to practice righteousness and purity; we have to be generous and we have to make sure to walk it and not just talk it. There are some questions you should ask yourself too…get really honest with you and God on this. How much time do you spend on the Scripture and the pursuit of understanding them? What are your guidelines for righteousness and purity? Do you avoid situations that could lead to sin? Do you tithe or just throw a dollar or two in the plate? You do know that a “tithe” means 10% of your income (salary, social security, disability, oil royalties). Don’t be shy on this one…you really will reap what you sow! And lastly, in regards to walking it and not just talking it, are you one of those people who spout off scripture at every turn and yet don’t apply it to yourself? There’s an old saying, “Preach the gospel every day…and some days use words!” Live it, love it, learn it…c’mon, you can do that!
