Are you proud or humble? Are you honest about the answer? Humility needs to be clarified: being humble doesn’t mean you walk around with your head down and back away from every challenge. Being humble means you know what your gifts are, but you acknowledge and know from Whom you received them. Being humble isn’t being weak…being humble takes strength! After the fall of Adam, man’s character and nature changed. What started out as pure confidence, quickly changed to pride. What started as love, changed to lust; what started as steadfast changed to stubborn. You get the picture! God created perfection, but disobedience led to separation from that, with the end result of something that is lesser. When we humble ourselves that puts us in an excellent position…that of being open to the grace of God. James 4:6 tells us that God gives grace and favor to the humble. 1 Peter 5:6 tells us to be humble under the hand of God and we will be exalted. It’s a win-win situation! We continue with our last chapter…James 5. In this chapter, James teaches about the power and reassurance of faith. He challenges believers to examine the quality of their daily lives in terms of actions and attitudes. The end of the chapter encourages us on the triumph of faith. Some have misunderstood James’ comments regarding the rich…as he tells them to “weep and howl for the miseries which are coming upon you." (Vs 1). James is not railing against riches; he is making the point that if someone is not of the Lord, even his riches will not help him when he dies. In comparison to the riches in Christ, the riches of men are like dust and rust…worthless. He continues to impress on the reader the importance of faith (binding) in Jesus Christ. A summary of James 1-5 includes the major faith principles:

As we reflect on this July 4, 2013, I want us to think on the greatness of this nation. We have done so much and it has been so successful. But I think we are slipping a bit. As our country has slowly removed God, references to Him, prayer and Bible from the public square, has anyone noticed the precipitous decline of our military might, our standing in the world, our academic achievements, our financial strength and the overall health of our country? Whoa…I think we’re cruisin’ for a bruisin’! A long time ago, it was said that America was great because her people were great, but that it would remain so only as long as her people remain great. We have gone from laws against abortion, homosexuality and pornography to laws for those issues. We have gone from laws for prayer and Bible reading in public school to laws against them. 2 Chronicles 7:14 is looking mighty pertinent right now! God says that, “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) Wow – what a crummy employer that pays you with death!!! – separation from God FOREVER! If you work for sin, you are hooked on such a cruel master. On the other hand, God doesn’t “pay” you to work for Him; it’s voluntary on your part, and a free gift on His part. This free gift is eternal life. You can’t earn it, buy it or barter for it; for if you could, then it wouldn’t be a FREE GIFT, now would it? We need to understand a few basics: eternal means it never ceases. Also, the basic concept here involves union…coming together with something as one. Physical Life: UNION of body and soul — human birth Spiritual Life: UNION of soul and God — new birth-born again Eternal Life: Eternal UNION of soul and God — final stop You unite with God in Christ = gift of eternal life Jesus knew exactly what He was getting into – a painful, excruciating death…a cost that cost Him everything…right up to and including His life. Stop and think now – it cost YOU NOTHING…NADA, but it cost God everything and cost Jesus His life. The wages of sin is death – separation from God – SEPARATES. The gift of eternal life – UNION with God – UNITES. I rest my case! Romans 5:8 gives us the heart of the atonement: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Court adjourned! The disobedience of Adam and Eve meant that they and all of us were plunged into sin and corruption…far from the delight of the Garden of Eden. Among other things, innocence was lost, pain endured in childbirth was increased, and the ground was cursed making it harder to make a living–the ultimate loss was the separation from God. This separation means corruption entered into the human existence. It is like a computer virus–it corrupts everything. The only remedy is to clean it out and run a new program. That new program is Jesus. Death came with Adam, but life with Jesus Christ.
