Are you proud or humble? Are you honest about the answer? Humility needs to be clarified: being humble doesn’t mean you walk around with your head down and back away from every challenge. Being humble means you know what your gifts are, but you acknowledge and know from Whom you received them. Being humble isn’t being weak…being humble takes strength! After the fall of Adam, man’s character and nature changed. What started out as pure confidence, quickly changed to pride. What started as love, changed to lust; what started as steadfast changed to stubborn. You get the picture! God created perfection, but disobedience led to separation from that, with the end result of something that is lesser. When we humble ourselves that puts us in an excellent position…that of being open to the grace of God. James 4:6 tells us that God gives grace and favor to the humble. 1 Peter 5:6 tells us to be humble under the hand of God and we will be exalted. It’s a win-win situation! One time I wrote in my journal, “I shall perish in the darkness of my doubt without the light of the hope You give me.” Ever feel like that? What do you do? You can flounder in despair or you can run to the presence of the Lord to fill you with strength and wisdom…your choice. But God does give us some direction…stay “right” with Him and it will go well with you. Psalm 1 gives us a great overview of what happens to the righteous as well as the wicked…and it ain’t pretty…at least for the wicked side of things! The righteous, those who know and love God and submit to His directions, they don’t walk with the wicked; they meditate on and delight in the law of the Lord. God says they will be watered and prosperous. The wicked on the other hand, do walk and give approval to scoffers and sinners; they don’t meditate on or delight in God’s laws. They are like chaff and are blown away, they won’t be in the assembly of the righteous and they will perish! Pretty stark, but pretty eye opening…at least for those who want to see. So, don’t go there…but stay right with God, so it won’t go wrong with you! [Listen to entire sermon by audio below. When people go to you for something, do they find an empty cookie jar? Do you have inside of you what is needed for their refreshment, renewing or restoration? Or, like the empty cookie jar, you are just “painted” on the outside as a Christian? We are lacking and empty and far from what God is, but your jar can be full, so to speak, full of Him, if you let Him. 1 John 1:5, “…God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.” When people come to you, let them find your cookie jar full of His holiness and not your emptiness! Without admitting that we are sinners, we can never have the type of sorrow for our wrongdoing that leads to repentance! That is a hard pill to swallow. But if you have been following along with my sermons, there is a thread in there about the “Adam nature”. That is the nature we inherited from what Adam did, NOT from what God did. That Adam nature is low level, base, rough and enmity (antagonism, hostility and hatred) to God. Oh, but that’s not me…oh, yes it is.
