We all have been in situations that we needed help getting out of. Many of us are in some right now. Whom we turn to, or even if we stubbornly try to self-rescue, can be a life mistake. Can you give yourself CPR? Let me see you do your own chest compressions! It’s not going to work, is it? So we call 911 and pray they send someone who knows what they are doing and in time before it is too late. Are you in a place where your heart is turning hard and you can see nothing for you in the way of hope? Caring rescue is there, and it is close. Contact is not made by dialing 911, but by calling out to the one that loves you – not only now, but for all of time, the past, present, and the future. Call on Jesus. Because of His love, we are and can be, forever saved. “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) Through God’s unmerited grace, not as the result of any effort, ability, intelligent choice, or act of service on our part, we become Christians. Out of gratitude for this free gift, we will seek to help and serve others with kindness, love and gentleness, and not merely to please ourselves. We are each under construction by our God who creates masterpieces, and are a work in progress. Christ is day by day chiseling and building us. He is removing the unwanted and harmful things in our lives and rebuilding the internal workings of our heart and mind. Just like the roads we travel each day, the construction goes on and the traffic cones are deployed. We must steer around them just as we need to steer around the things that are still obstacles in us so we don’t fall into pot holes or drive where the road is no longer there. Peter begins his first letter in chapter three by saying, “In the same way you wives…” I had to stop before reading any further and ask the question, what “same way” is he talking about? In 1 Peter 2:21-24 he gives the answer, “For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin (crucify the flesh), and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your soul.” Wow—what an answer! All of us, not just our mothers, must come and follow in His steps as Jesus also entrusted (committed) Himself to His Father in heaven. We thank God for our mothers—past and present—who have dedicated their lives to following in the steps of Jesus. We as a people have the hardest time letting go of the controls of our life decisions. We think that only we know what is best for us, and to trust someone else is not easy. To completely trust our life, job, home, and family to another is far beyond what we feel comfortable doing. “The Lord will guide you always.” (Isaiah 58:11) God’s plan is personal. Every believer has the right to take God’s word as though it was written just for them. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.” (Psalm 32:8) This verse speaks of an individual pathway, not just the general way of righteousness set before all Christians. The personal interest God shows in each one of us, as revealed in the Bible, is astonishing. All our thoughts, our ways, and our words are known to Him. In Psalm 139:2-6 it says, “You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.” The Lord not only knows us, but He loves us. Trust in His love. But a lot of the Scriptures address the subject of persecution, so we need to look at it, too. Persecution, meaning harassment or punishment for what you believe in is a tough place to be; but the end result of being persecuted can actually help you…if you let it! Your response to persecution determines whether you will be bitter about it or better because of it. But in order to achieve the more perfect result from being persecuted, two other areas need to be included, that of submission and suffering. Yeah, I know…most people’s favorite subjects! In 1 Peter, chapters 1 through 5, we are given some of the areas in which God indicates we should practice submission: citizenship, marriage, work, and Christian ministry. How is that connected you may ask? Well, to get through any persecution and suffering in a more amenable way you have to submit ever so totally to God; to trust Him and depend on Him for your rescue and resolve. The areas listed throughout the Book of 1 Peter amply cover most aspects of our lives in which we can practice, practice, practice because you cannot effectively submit to God unless you are practiced in submission. So even though most of us loathe persecution, suffering and submission, they are intricately woven with each other to help us, rather than hinder us in seeking and serving God and mankind. Listen to the sermon and glean even more gems of God’s wisdom.
