Some of you may remember the comedian Flip Wilson and his humorous routine where he would say, “Here come da judge, here come da judge”. Is that the song people sing when you come in the room? I hope not, but if you struggle with being somewhat judgmental, Jesus has a remedy. He says, "don’t”! Ever notice that some Christians are piercingly critical people. Get a revelation folks; our criticism often crushes the one being criticized – whether you know it or not, it does. Criticism is NOT correction. Criticism is the Adam nature’s version of correction! The Spirit of God is the only One in a position to criticize because His criticism is not disparaging, it is correction in the superlative. We have to let Him do it because He is the only One who can do it with hurting and wounding. You may never voice your criticism but if you’re even thinking it, you have a problem! There are a number of long distance swimmers who cross the English Channel, or who try to swim from Cuba to the USA, etc. In order to do that, they need some help in conquering the sharks or else they will certainly be consumed. With the Lord, we have the same help to “conquer the sharks” of life. Read Philippians 4:4-13 and you will see the first thing in this battle is to rejoice! But it isn’t about jingle bells, reindeer, Santa and elves, decorating homes, greeting cards, gifts, parties, or traveling to be with families. The reason, Jesus’ birth, is found in Luke. (Luke 2:8-14) Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem was an event that transformed the shepherds’ lives who observed it and billions of others throughout time. When people go to you for something, do they find an empty cookie jar? Do you have inside of you what is needed for their refreshment, renewing or restoration? We are living in a time of a tremendous spiritual warfare, and Satan is unrelenting in his efforts to suppress the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is nothing new for he was there in the Garden of Eden lying to and deceiving Adam and Eve into eating the forbidden fruit even though they knew God’s word and truth, for it was hidden in their hearts. Satan lied to them about what God really said and they “took the bait” of deception. Romans 1:18 says, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” Suppress here means to “hold it captive” and “hold it down.” Romans 1:19 goes on to say, “…because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.” God made it visible, understandable, clear, plain, known, and spread abroad in their very being. God’s truth is innate, possessed at birth, inherent, remains fixed, and intrinsic within mankind. However, Satan’s mission is to kill, steal, and destroy the mighty work and plan of God. Perhaps there have been times when you have been on the mountaintop with Jesus and were reluctant to come down to the everyday grind of life in the valley below. As Christians, we must remember that Jesus has given us the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to be a very present help in time of need regardless of our circumstances. Jesus brought Peter, James and his brother, John, to a high mountain by themselves, and He was transfigured there before them. Jesus' face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light. Moses and Elijah appeared and were talking with Jesus. God spoke out of a cloud and said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." (Matthew 17:5) What an experience on the mountain they must have had. Peter said, "Lord, it is good for us to be here." (Matthew 17:1-13) We can only imagine their profound joy and trembling at the same time. However, it came time for them to come down and continue their journey of faith where they were hammered, forged and transformed into the image of Jesus Christ. (Romans 12:2) We must allow the King of glory to direct our every step and show us the more perfect way. The spiritual and physical landscape will be threatening and ominous at times, but nothing is impossible with our God of Miracles. David said, "Lift up your heads, O gates, and be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in! Who is the King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle...The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory." (Psalm 24:7-10) Is the King of glory having His way with you on mountains high or valleys deep? The Pope remarked that, “the church has become too focused on ‘small-minded rules’” regarding these issues of today. Many applauded what they heard as a “message of inclusion.” One elderly Catholic lady said that the Pope was “spot on.” She went on to say, “As Catholic Christians, we do need to be more welcoming.” No one has been more welcoming to a lost and sinful world than Jesus Christ who gave His life as a ransom for all and said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) That’s pretty inclusive IF one chooses to put His yoke on and learn from the Holy Spirit His way, His truth, and His life! Not all will enter the Kingdom of Heaven as illustrated in the parable of the marriage feast as told by Jesus in Matthew 22:1-14. Jesus also said, “Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14) Yes, there are rules, ancient boundaries, established by God Himself and most assuredly they are not “small-minded rules.” God’s words are words of sober truth and need to be obeyed in the strength of the Holy Spirit. When we come to Jesus and receive Him as Lord and Savior, He will equip us and enable us to overcome all of our ungodly ways and habits and transform us into His glorious image. (Romans 12:2) Remember, there is inclusion for the faithful and obedient and exclusion for the unfaithful and disobedient. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “It’s not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena…who, at best, knows in the end the triumph of great achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly. So that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.” In honoring the fallen, we need to remind ourselves of what they sacrificed. The freedoms they fought to preserve are being taken away, one by one. The freedom of religion is under attack by a deliberate effort to stop all reference to God, the Ten Commandments and Jesus Christ. Also under attack is the honor of our country. There are some very, very important times ahead for us, our country, and the world — this affects me and you. My church in Tampa, Florida, Great Hope Christian Fellowship, has II Chronicles 7:14 on a banner hanging on our wall. It says, “If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” We need to be on our knees daily before our Living God on behalf of this great nation.
