When we lead – we often lead ourselves and others “off the cliff”. The reason is that we really don’t know the best way to go. It’s hard to admit that, I know, but pride is a tough part of the broken, corrupted wisdom we inherited from Adam’s separation from God. When Jesus says, “Come, follow Me,” it holds a huge significance. Jesus knows where He’s going – and we don’t! And a big part of following is…waiting on the leader. Waiting on the Lord is not in vain. Follow Jesus and you’ll get life, and not life in prison, either! Our sentence is to life — everlasting — in Jesus. Step back, get out of the way, wait on the Lord and let Him lead you in the way in which you must go. Knowing the truth is knowing what is said in the Bible to be true. The knowledge of the scriptures affects our attitude toward the present and the future. The more we know about what God has done in years past, the greater the confidence we have about what He will do in the days ahead. We should read our Bible diligently to increase our trust that God's will is best for us. "For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope." (Romans 15:4 NIV) The Bible is the living book of God's words that reveals to us not only the past but the truth of all that is happening around us now and what is to come in the future. Through the Holy Spirit, we are able to discern who the adversary is and his agenda. God's truth is the light that shows us the enemy's devious works, and by that Light they are destroyed. But there is a cost to wisdom…you often will be mocked and scoffed and not honored for that wisdom. This is where many people just lay it down and give up. Wisdom, even though hard to follow, carries such better results. Duh-I think that’s why they call the alternate, “folly”! Who wouldn’t think that, when you know the end result of wisdom is that your days will be multiplied and years of life will be added to you (not “time”, but results!). James 1:5 “But if any of you LACKS wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously (bigheartedly, openhandedly, liberally) and without reproach (blame, criticism, reprimand, scolding), and it will be given to him.” We need to “wise up” and “look up”. When people go to you for something, do they find an empty cookie jar? Do you have inside of you what is needed for their refreshment, renewing or restoration? Or, like the empty cookie jar, you are just “painted” on the outside as a Christian? Peter asked the Lord how many times he should forgive someone who sinned against him. The Jewish law of that era required forgiveness for three times, so Peter thought he was being generous when he asked if it should be seven. And what did Jesus say…seventy times seven! That doesn’t mean to keep track, folks. That was just an example of hyperbole, meaning it was an exaggerated amount to get the point across. In doing the math, that would be 490 times…but that is for each offense. So, if offended ten times in a day, that’s 4,900 times to forgive someone in one day! You get the point. Jesus was saying to always forgive. And He qualified it saying to forgive others as you have been forgiven by Him. The deal is this: confess, repent, and return the favor to others. There are four stages in this forgiveness business, and we will cover them today. First off, you have to decide who you love most…you or God. Once you know that, if it is God you love, you’ll prefer to do things His way. You will have wisdom, instruction and protection. You will love His ways and shun the ways of the world, not because they are rules from a prudish God, but because you love Him, more than you love yourself. Read Psalm 73 and you will find out, as the Psalmist did, why you should even bother to do it God’s way. He looked all around and saw the wicked flourishing! He lamented before God that he had sacrificed and done without in order to follow God, and yet his life was full of suffering and lack. He was angry until he entered the presence of God and received the peace that surpasses all understanding. In that moment, he knew what God was saying. The rich and ungodly may have an easier time here, but they shall be forever condemned because they loved the world more than God. Don’t find out too late that it is better to do things God’s way…better both here and in eternity! Theodore Roosevelt once said, “It’s not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena…who, at best, knows in the end the triumph of great achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly. So that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.” In honoring the fallen, we need to remind ourselves of what they sacrificed. The freedoms they fought to preserve are being taken away, one by one. The freedom of religion is under attack by a deliberate effort to stop all reference to God, the Ten Commandments and Jesus Christ. Also under attack is the honor of our country. There are some very, very important times ahead for us, our country, and the world — this affects me and you. My church in Tampa, Florida, Great Hope Christian Fellowship, has II Chronicles 7:14 on a banner hanging on our wall. It says, “If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” We need to be on our knees daily before our Living God on behalf of this great nation.
