We continue with our last chapter…James 5. In this chapter, James teaches about the power and reassurance of faith. He challenges believers to examine the quality of their daily lives in terms of actions and attitudes. The end of the chapter encourages us on the triumph of faith. Some have misunderstood James’ comments regarding the rich…as he tells them to “weep and howl for the miseries which are coming upon you." (Vs 1). James is not railing against riches; he is making the point that if someone is not of the Lord, even his riches will not help him when he dies. In comparison to the riches in Christ, the riches of men are like dust and rust…worthless. He continues to impress on the reader the importance of faith (binding) in Jesus Christ. A summary of James 1-5 includes the major faith principles:

Remember, it’s one thing to be convinced of the need for the new life, but it is an entirely different thing to acquire the new life! The fruit of the Spirit of God is the key in this whole thing! The fruit of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit are not the same…the fruit of the Spirit is what we ARE and the gifts of the Spirit are what we DO. No one can be or do what God desires without the indwelling of the Spirit. Go ahead; ask Him to come inside…your whole life will change! God makes that clear, too, when we read in John 6:28-29 that the work of God is that you believe in Him Whom He has sent; and that is prerequisite #1! The “works” of God means giving Him thanks, making known His deeds, singing to Him, giving Him glory, speaking of His wonders, being glad, seeking His strength, and remembering His wonders and marvels. So, in addition to feeding the hungry, helping the widows, the unwed mothers and the plethora of works out there, don’t forget to pursue God Himself! God wants us hot not lukewarm (Revelation 3:15-16). We have to know and live the truth as God portrays, not as we see it; we have to practice righteousness and purity; we have to be generous and we have to make sure to walk it and not just talk it. There are some questions you should ask yourself too…get really honest with you and God on this. How much time do you spend on the Scripture and the pursuit of understanding them? What are your guidelines for righteousness and purity? Do you avoid situations that could lead to sin? Do you tithe or just throw a dollar or two in the plate? You do know that a “tithe” means 10% of your income (salary, social security, disability, oil royalties). Don’t be shy on this one…you really will reap what you sow! And lastly, in regards to walking it and not just talking it, are you one of those people who spout off scripture at every turn and yet don’t apply it to yourself? There’s an old saying, “Preach the gospel every day…and some days use words!” Live it, love it, learn it…c’mon, you can do that! We covered two areas: (1) why good works are important and (2) the sequence to follow to make sure the good works are God’s good works and not just our own, which are the good works that will burn. In finishing the sequence to follow to assure the good works are a work of the Spirit of God, we came to understand that:

Tonight’s title says something to us. When a butterfly comes out of the cocoon, it doesn’t sit around and complain that it can’t fly or that no one told him how to fly. And he doesn’t ask “what do you expect of a caterpillar?” He just starts flapping his wings and flies. When we come to know the Lord, we can’t just talk about a life in Christ (the yappin’ part)—you have to live a life in Christ (the flappin’ part). Get up and DO IT! “Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.” (James 2:17) Audio: (Click forward button below to play audio of message and/or download mp3 file.)
