It is hard to fathom that God would descend to this earth to be born of a virgin by His own miraculous seed. His name is Jesus, or Immanuel, which means “God with us.” He lived among men and was made for a little while lower than the angels. He fulfilled His mission by giving His life as a sacrifice to redeem mankind from eternal death. God was also with mankind from the beginning of creation, and Jesus was there to witness His Father’s divine power and handiwork. Paul says, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” Therefore, man can see the invisible God by witnessing His awesome creation, but only in Jesus Christ can a man be transformed and given a new mind and heart to know the good, acceptable and perfect will of God. In Christ alone can a soul declare, God is not only with me—He is in me! (See Hebrews 2:7; John 1:1-18, 3:1-21; Romans 1:20, 12:1-2; Colossians 1:27) (Listen to entire sermon by audio below.) Jesus told Peter that he would deny Him three times before the cock crowed. Peter insisted that he would never fall away nor deny the Lord, and that he was willing to die with Jesus. Peter’s devotion and zeal for Jesus seemed to be proven true when he cut off the right ear of Malchus, one of the servants of the high priest who came to arrest Jesus. However, when Jesus was arrested and taken away, Peter followed “at a distance” and when questioned about being a follower of Jesus, Peter denied that he even knew Jesus—three times before the rooster crowed. This account proves to all of us how vulnerable we are to the temptations of Satan to deny Christ in our daily lives in any given situation. Peter was greatly humbled through this experience, and from that time on he was never the same but was more ardent to receive and welcome the divine power of God in order to become a partaker of Jesus’ divine nature. Be encouraged like Peter, apply all diligence, and run with a godly passion the race before you in the strength, power and wisdom of the Holy Spirit of God. That surely spells s-a-c-r-i-f-i-c-e! Of all the spiritual disciplines, sacrifice most closely aligns with the character and mission of Jesus. That means every one of us must enter into the discipline of sacrifice, not just those called into the front line in ministry. If your song includes the verses, my comfort, my desires, my dreams, my plans, rather than your life being all about God, then you need to change your tune! In aligning your life with Christ, He will teach you all about personal, relational and financial sacrifice–and you will live to tell the tale. Don’t listen to the world, the flesh or the devil; listen to the Lord and serve Him well. The prophet Micah, approximately 700 years before the birth of Jesus, said, “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.” (Micah 5:2) Bethlehem literally means house of bread. Therefore, how appropriate for God to arrange for Jesus, the Bread of Life, to be born in Bethlehem. Shepherds were visited by an angel who told them that a savior had been born in the City of David (Bethlehem) who is Christ the Lord. They were also told that they would find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. (Luke 2:11-12) There is no mistake. God placed Jesus in a feeding trough to be bread for men. Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever; and the bread also which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (John 6:51) (Message originally recorded 12/16/12.) Paul said that these people exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the creator who is blessed forever. (Romans 1:25) When Paul was in Athens, he also witnessed a city full of idols, where he preached Jesus and His resurrection to the Jews, to God-fearing Gentiles and philosophers of that time. (Acts 17:16-34) In response to Paul’s message of the resurrection of the dead, some of his audience began to sneer and mock, and called him an idle babbler, but others desired to hear him again at a later time. In contrast, some of his listeners joined him and believed—not later, but immediately. In our society today, there continue to be those who reject Jesus and worship and serve the creature (god of this world), but they are fast approaching a fixed day when God will judge the world in righteousness through His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. (Acts 17:31) Let the doubters doubt, but let the righteous stand and SERVE THE CREATOR.
