Sometimes you do doubt, even when you love God with all your heart. The prophet Jeremiah certainly loved God, but when the Babylonians overran Jerusalem in 586 BC, he surely had a “bout of doubt”. In Lamentations 5:20 he cried, "Why do You forget us forever; why do You forsake us for so long?" Doubt is definitely a problem—a big problem. God calls it sin. Fight it with all your might. Know the occasions of doubt; know the sources of doubt and above all, know the cure for doubt, all of which we will discuss in our sermon today. Remember, even though we sometimes hate to admit it, all doubt can be traced to unbelief in God’s word. Confess that sin to God and move on from there to be immersed in God’s word, then examine yourself and pray like never before! All throughout the Bible, it reiterates the truth that Jesus Christ gives you life. Believing it doesn’t make it so…God saying it makes it so! I am reminded of the example a teacher once used where he showed his students two eggs. To the naked eye, they were exactly the same, but one of them was fertilized (it had “life” in it); the other was just a yolk (potential for life, but it had not been fertilized). The teacher explained that once the egg with life in it ceased being an egg, it would be reborn into something quite different, even glorious in comparison…a “new creature”. The other would just perish. God said that those who have His life in them (Jesus) shall be saved and forever dwell with Him as a “new creature”. So you see, no eggs can go to heaven, only chickens! The Pope remarked that, “the church has become too focused on ‘small-minded rules’” regarding these issues of today. Many applauded what they heard as a “message of inclusion.” One elderly Catholic lady said that the Pope was “spot on.” She went on to say, “As Catholic Christians, we do need to be more welcoming.” No one has been more welcoming to a lost and sinful world than Jesus Christ who gave His life as a ransom for all and said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) That’s pretty inclusive IF one chooses to put His yoke on and learn from the Holy Spirit His way, His truth, and His life! Not all will enter the Kingdom of Heaven as illustrated in the parable of the marriage feast as told by Jesus in Matthew 22:1-14. Jesus also said, “Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14) Yes, there are rules, ancient boundaries, established by God Himself and most assuredly they are not “small-minded rules.” God’s words are words of sober truth and need to be obeyed in the strength of the Holy Spirit. When we come to Jesus and receive Him as Lord and Savior, He will equip us and enable us to overcome all of our ungodly ways and habits and transform us into His glorious image. (Romans 12:2) Remember, there is inclusion for the faithful and obedient and exclusion for the unfaithful and disobedient. And even if Jesus already owns your soul, the spiritual battles still continue in order to confuse you, weaken you and, as God puts it, “rob, kill and destroy” you. Whew, that’s some enemy we are fighting. Satan is a “no holds barred”, evil and brutal enemy who is supernaturally determined to either own or destroy all that God has made…so you cannot take a knife to this gunfight! This spiritual war (that I fear our country is losing) cannot be fought with the weapons of this world but with the heavenly weapons of God that have divine power to demolish all strongholds. Trust God; let Him lead you in every thought, word and deed, for He has been leading this fight since the beginning. Onward Christian soldiers! “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) Through God’s unmerited grace, not as the result of any effort, ability, intelligent choice, or act of service on our part, we become Christians. Out of gratitude for this free gift, we will seek to help and serve others with kindness, love and gentleness, and not merely to please ourselves. We are each under construction by our God who creates masterpieces, and are a work in progress. Christ is day by day chiseling and building us. He is removing the unwanted and harmful things in our lives and rebuilding the internal workings of our heart and mind. Just like the roads we travel each day, the construction goes on and the traffic cones are deployed. We must steer around them just as we need to steer around the things that are still obstacles in us so we don’t fall into pot holes or drive where the road is no longer there. Clothing, along with water, air, food, and shelter, are most certainly paramount and indispensable for the very survival and existence of mankind on earth. However, along with our earthly apparel, we must be clothed on high by God, through Jesus Christ, if we are to inherit eternal life. A man without Christ is like a man wearing filthy rags – not fit for the kingdom of God. (See the parable of the wedding feast in Matthew 22.) Romans 3:23 says, “For all have signed and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” Isaiah also gives us a description of one who is unclean even in his righteous, well-intended deeds. He says, “For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; and all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.” (Isaiah 64:6) “Kingdom clothing” cannot be fabricated and worn by man. Only God, through Jesus Christ, can adorn the soul with righteous apparel. Isaiah 61:10 says, “I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation. He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” Have you looked into the “mirror of your soul” lately? If so, what did you see – he filthy rags of this world draped over a vagabond wandering aimlessly in this world without a home? Or did you see God’s heavenly garments of purity and righteousness in Christ Jesus? (See Isaiah 1:18) Paul said, “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you – unless you fail the test? (2 Corinthians 13:5) What you wear determines where you are going! Psalms 104, 105, and 106 give us a wonderful thread of who God is. That thread helps us to know Him all the more…His greatness, His mercy, His love for us. It holds true…to know Him is to love Him! Satan has worked hard to give out so much “misinformation” about God—for deception is his game. Evil doings happen all over the planet, and many people shake their fists at God instead of Satan. Satan IS evil…God IS good…any questions! If you KNOW God, you will push back any deception in regards to Him. Read all of each Psalm: savor what the Scriptures have for us. Psalm 104 – the Lord’s care over all His works Psalm 105 – the Lord’s wonderful works in behalf of Israel Psalm 106 –Israel’s rebelliousness and the Lord’s deliverance If you have never put your complete faith in Jesus Christ for your eternal salvation, why not believe what God's word says and call on Jesus Christ to save you right now? Genesis 6:5 tells us that man was wicked and continually evil so God sent a flood to cleanse the earth of all that pollution. Big sin = big flood = big change…right? Wrong! The Bible chronicles mankind’s track record of continuing to disobey God. The discipline given by Him is to reprimand and stop the disobedience but that gets lost in the wash of man’s pride and malevolence. God’s wondrous love, though, is not thwarted by man’s foolishness and even though revolt is in the air, God still provides a rescue for His beloved children. What a God we serve. That slickness is disguised in Satan’s deceit. He is the father of lies, the prince of dung and is out to rob, kill and destroy you…and we need to get that into the front of our heads! There is the world, the flesh and the devil, but the devil is the one who misuses the other two and takes advantage of their inherent weaknesses to make you weaker. Our example is Jesus, who resisted every attempt of Satan to tempt Him. Sadly, far too many followers of Christ have given in to the temptations of having power and control. They give in and end up in false doctrines and sin. So let Satan grasp at “air” – you stick to the solid, immovable, pure and glorious power of God to combat the world, the flesh and the devil. God says that, “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) Wow – what a crummy employer that pays you with death!!! – separation from God FOREVER! If you work for sin, you are hooked on such a cruel master. On the other hand, God doesn’t “pay” you to work for Him; it’s voluntary on your part, and a free gift on His part. This free gift is eternal life. You can’t earn it, buy it or barter for it; for if you could, then it wouldn’t be a FREE GIFT, now would it? We need to understand a few basics: eternal means it never ceases. Also, the basic concept here involves union…coming together with something as one. Physical Life: UNION of body and soul — human birth Spiritual Life: UNION of soul and God — new birth-born again Eternal Life: Eternal UNION of soul and God — final stop You unite with God in Christ = gift of eternal life Jesus knew exactly what He was getting into – a painful, excruciating death…a cost that cost Him everything…right up to and including His life. Stop and think now – it cost YOU NOTHING…NADA, but it cost God everything and cost Jesus His life. The wages of sin is death – separation from God – SEPARATES. The gift of eternal life – UNION with God – UNITES. I rest my case! Romans 5:8 gives us the heart of the atonement: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Court adjourned!
